Sometimes you have to just take little moments to sit and look. I had stopped my car and sat in it for a few minutes talking with my friend on the phone and watched as the water began pouring down my windshield. It felt good to just sit and not move anywhere for a little while and sun was bright and warm. Once those drops reached near the end of the windshield I saw them cast a luminous shadow on my dash. This was a treat for me and I made this picture above. I used maximum depth of field to try to keep it all in near focus and sharpness. I also new I was going to have to crop it into a narrow horizontal because the framing kept too much of the windshield or console in the frame and I wanted it to be more of an abstract landscape. This isn't my typical sort of shot, I like people to be in my photographs, but I did think that this moment needed to be recorded. Photograph by Richard Sayer
Today I got a chance to work on a global story that came into our neighborhood. Children caught in the earthquake that devastated Haiti last week are now living here in Crawford County. These children were in the process of being adopted by the Mattocks family in Saegertown when the earthquake hit. Their arrival here this early is actually one of the good things that came about because of this tragedy. I managed to get a couple of candid portraits of Peter, the second from oldest of the four brothers. Though I knew a picture of just one of the children would satisfy the story, I thought concentrating on one of the boys to find something within him to cature could perhaps tell a deeper story. Peter is a bright kid. When ask by the reporter interviewing he and his brother what do they think their former school in Haiti needs the most in terms of help, Peter simply said love. I also included below a couple othe frames from my 40 minutes or so with the family as they were being interviewed and the family portrait I took just before leaving. This story should appear in Monday's paper, Meadville Tribune photos by Richard Sayer
I have a little beagle whose name is lil'bro. We got him after getting our first dog, a big lab/dalmation mix who really needed a companion, so we got him a little brother--hence the name. This beagle loves three things above all else, a soft place to laydown(preferably with a blanket), sniffing and food. Food is really king for lil'bro. We've had to limit his portions because he was--as good doc Stanton put it--becoming an ottoman. This, of course means when he is hungry and knows its time to eat, that he goes a little nuts. When I get up to let him out in the morning I will get his food ready as he is out. He then does his thing as fast as he can and then returns to the door and repeatedly throws himself against it until I let him back in to eat. Its sorta cruel on my part to take the time to take photographs of him doing this, but I documented it 5 or 6 years ago and thought to up-date it just yesterday. The little guy can still get some air! Below Java still chimes in too! Photograph by Richard Sayer
My assignment was to cover a groundhog day event that probably, well...not probably, most certainly would not have a groundhog. I was not hopeful for a very good picture, but as I've said before, I love working in a small community and covering these kinds of stories. And even though I went into it with poor attitude, I found when I got there that the good folks at the Woodcock Creek Nature Center had some arts and crafts for the kids and they made these Groundhog hat/crowns. Suddenly I had a visual connection to groundhog day that I could wrap my eyes around and begin working to find a photo. This picture I liked because the boy, Matthew, was just enjoying part of the event and was by himself in his thoughts. Meadville Tribune photograph by: Richard Sayer
Meredith Semon was crowned Miss Meadville Area 2010. SayerMotter Photography were the official pageant photographers. This slideshow showcases images of Semon that night, a photo shoot prior to the pageant and another photo shoot after the pageant. We also interviewed Semon to gain a little better understanding of who she is and her platform. Follow the link above to view the slideshow and hear what Semon had to say. (intermingled into the slideshow are some of Semon's personal images.) Photographs by SayerMotter Photography.
