I have to admit that one of the greatest lesson I ever learned was 'question everything'. This came about after I first heard ' 'question authority' and it seemed to be even more to the point. I have been told over and over again--'you can't do that' or you're wasting your time doing that because it'll never happen or work!' Usually that means I'm going to try it. I learned that this way. I have 'hated' artists in the past because I just couldn't figure out why they became well - known artists. In almost every account this 'hatred' has stayed in my mind and I couldn't escape these artists. I kept using them as examples of why I think the art world isn't really representational of what we should be focussed on. And in virtually every case(though the verdict is still out on some in my mind) I have found reason to understand and eventually embrace--at least slightly their claim---or someone elses claim on their---fame. Tonight I said as I was photographing Jennifer--I'm going to do something we're told not to do and I began positioning one light to shine directly at the camera. Most of the results didn't really work---for obvious reasons---that's why we're taught not to do that--but I'm always determined to break the rules in order to find that one ore two images that can be found. Not sure 100% if we found it tonight, but it was fun to experiment and see what we could find. And I think the pictures we took in this set-up--though not edited yet--might lead to further work down the road with this idea! You never know! SayerMotter Photographs by Richard Sayer.
