I have tried to plan out team photos and team/individual shoots. Each time I have planned this something hasn't gone according to that plan and we improvise. This improvise is what we do do perhaps better than most because of our newspaper training. On assignment for newspapers we only plan to put ourselves in the right position to capture the unplanned---so when a snafu to a plan comes up--we don't panic, we adapt and make the best of it. My hope for the Saegertown wresting team was to have the shoot in the main gym, with the wrestling match lights on and the mat out on the floor. As it turned out a game was home in the gym and we ended up in the cafeteria...adapt! I got a call Thursday afternoon/evening and was told the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association needed a team picture. I hadn't really gotten to it and it was...well shot in a cafeteria and in my mind in no shape to be sent out. Oh and they needed by the morning. So ..... the newspaper training again came in and I adapted. Now .... one thing that I learned and believe wholeheartedly in when it comes to newspaper photography is never alter a news photograph. So this isn't exactly newspaper photography, but the skills to get work done on deadline are what helps me figure out how to navigate my way around the unexpected. Sa
