I was having a little string of bad luck awhile back. Nothing major. Some camera problems and some technical difficulties with getting some prints made and orders the way they were supposed to be. I'm not sure if it was all my fault or not, but I was taking responsibility for it because I just couldn't determine why it was happening. I had a terrible time getting Tyler Kenney's order correct. So in my last attempt before I would decide I'm not cut out for this business, I decided I needed to make something extra to give to Tyler. I had made this designed portrait, but wasn't happy with the first attempt, so I went back and hopefully improved it. I made an 8x10 of it and gave it the Tyler and his mom Lisa. Lisa said, you liked that one didn''t you, to Tyler and Tyler said he did. I was thrilled by that. I think sometimes I make most of my work geared toward trying the 'get' my client. I make pictures for them based on trying to figure out their personality and what they would want. With senior portraits, especially with guys, its tough because they aren't as interested as mom or dad--or especially grandma. Grandmas love those pictures of the their grand kids to prop up on the TV or fridge or exchange the one that is above the couch in the family room with all the rest of their family. So my ideas of pictures the kids will like, are likely not to be the ones bought and hung above grandma couch. But I still want to please my subjects as well, so I think I now take some for grandma, some for mom and some for the senior---somewhere in there I hope we're reaching all the important folks in that sort of complex client situation. This one was for Tyler and I'm glad I made it for him to make up for the delay in getting his order to him. SayerMotter Photography and design by Richard Sayer.
