Ok--so....even I admit this one is a little weird. One of my former students is making this body of work right now that is quite good. One of his pieces....for some reason made me think to ask 'Have you ever tried to drive a nail through a penny?' His work is very much dealing with christian beliefs and iconography. For some reason I saw this as something that made sense. I was nervous having asked this question because this student is also one who cut himself during my class with a paper cutter. So decided to try it first for myself. I used a hefty nail and was surprised at how easily the nail went through the penny. The board I used was this oak plank that I had nailed an apple and banana peel to earlier this year and decided to use these elements--still nailed to the board to make another photograph now with the penny. The apple was sort of disgusting so after a few frames I decided to take that out and toss it in my compost. I felt without the apple the photograph said even more and became almost like a comical dancing figure--yet not funny at the same time. I'll never dismiss where inspiration comes or why! Its a great thing to explore ideas, even if they seem a tad silly at first. By Richard Sayer
After all that exploration earlier I then made this! Art is quite a journey overall. In between I mowed the lawn and ate some dinner and organized some papers.
