Tonight was the team dual wrestling district championships at EUP. I got there a little late due to another assignment so I didn't photograph all weights. It turned out that 145 pounds--for whatever reason got me the best photos on two mats. Cochranton wrestled Reynolds and Conneaut Lake wrestled Fort LeBoeuf a the same time so I was watch two mats. Due to a sore back I sat up in the bleachers with a long lens. I like to do this occasionally anyway so it was good to do it today and rest my back a little. The difficult part is getting faces from up high. Basically I need someone on their back which means I usually am focussed on the loser and not the winner. Our local teams were getting beat handly by their opponents so this type of picture would tell the story anyway. The shame was, the Cochranton 145 pounder won his match and the best photo I got was showing the Reynolds wrestlers face--albeit in agony as he was getting man-handled. I spend some time trying to get a graphic/compositional piece but they didn't quite work--I wanted to show a wide shot of the mat and its designs, but I needed a really strong action like a lift in the right area of the mat or a strong strong face. The best faces came on the less decorated mat so I didn't really get this picture I'd hoped to get.
