When I started thinking about the type of portraiture I wanted to do I looked at a lot of styles. What I found was a lot of studio photography being done is geared towards the safer look--the lighting is softer and usually the shadows are very light. Backgrounds seemed to be the same from studio to studio - even the outdoor scenes seemed to be the same. I went way back into the past and started to look at early photography masters and I began to find a style of photography that I thought tied into my way of working. George Hurrell, Edward Steichen and even to some extent Yosuf Karsh all used light in much bolder ways. So when I get a chance to try something, I generally go more for this style than the softer--safer styles. Sometimes this works. I think when photographing athletes especially using a 'spotlight' works well. My studio session with MASH quarterback Aaron Lloyd on Sunday, because of the rain was entirely in the studio. Aaron wasn't thrilled about having his picture taken so I really wanted to make the session easy-going and I really wanted the pictures to be....well cool! I have many more of him smiling(his mom wanted some shots of him smiling) and we did some 'safer-softer' shots as well and over the next few days I'll begin to edit-crop and tone these to show them, but I wanted to show these today as out featured pictures. I hope he and his family like them. We'll get to do some more outside shots of Aaron next week. SayerMotter Photographs by Richard Sayer

We recently had a new modem installed in our house. Today I think I found that the person who came in to install the modem accidently(I hope) took my chord that connects my camera to my my computer. I was going to post a Senior portrait I took today, but I can't get the images off my camera. I'll try tomorrow to get a new chord or a card reader. Sooooooo....... I dug into the archives to find this picture of my friend Kate as she danced in a very weird setting----she was part of a dance troupe that danced during a sort of stuffy black-tie dinner. I took this using a slow shutter-speed and spinning the camera. I haven't seen kate in a very long time, but we're friends on facebook! Photograph by Richard Sayer

Tonight as I was photographing the Union City homecoming game against Saegertown I noticed these girls in bright gowns watching the action on the field. When Union City looked like they were about to score I decided to not pay attention to the action, touch downs are rarely ever my favorite type of action photos anyway, and concentrate on a feature picture of these girls. I would've like more context information somewhere in the composition--like the band or cheerleaders--something to make it say football game, but I did like the expressiveness of the girls. Unfortunately their team was stopped in a goal-line stand so the reaction of jumping and celebrating never really happened--that is what I'd have thought would've made a great picture. I was happy enough with the picture because it was a real moment and the girls didn't pay attention to me. Sometimes the best stuff happens behind you--so you have to always remember to look around.
