I photographed a family today who are struggling with the economy, job loss and the state budget stalemate holding back subsidy checks the family counts on to survive. As they colored together at the family kitchen table, Brooke, age 3, turned to look at a paper airplane her brother just sailed by her head. Meadville Tribune photograph by Richard Sayer

In our photography business we have made many cards to hand out with our number on them to contact. One of these images is the face of Lizzy Pecora with some computerized toning of the face, lips and eyes to bring a different look to the portrait. Sometime zero-ing in on the subjects face captures much more than the entire head and shoulders. Photograph by Richard Sayer
Exploring a portrait sometimes takes time and trying all sorts of things, sometimes lighting and composition help determine what makes the picture interesting or not. I like to push the limits and try different things - sometimes they work - sometimes they don't. Photograph by Richard Sayer
My idea of Portraiture has always been to capture something deeper than just the face with a nice expression. I believe we need in this world both the pictures that grandma loves, the bright smiling face and the deeper personal portraits that really speak of personality. The latter aren't always the most beautiful, but perhaps a better record of history. Photograph by Richard Sayer
Many people who have seen this photograph have struggled to see the person posing for a portrait, they see what they think is a lit cigarette. I, having taken the photo, struggled for a long time to see the cigarette. Once I did I saw how people could be confused at first. But I still mostly see my old friend Peggy. I made these photographs on August 12, 2009 at 6:45 A.M. This property is my family home. I grew up here. I love this place! This is also Ray taken a few years earlier in the abandon building that once housed what we called the bad boy school--or Juvey! Photograph by Richard Sayer
