I've been looking at my friend and colleague Harmony Motter's feature pictures over the last few days thinking--wow--thats what photography is all about. Seeing, capturing and experiencing life. In doing this we learn so much about who we are as a people. I admit I was a little jealous of Harmony's pictures as I was stuck in the office doing work that isn't photography. I wanted to be out there doing just what she was doing, recording moments in the life of Crawford County. While getting ready to work on a story about a local volleyball player, and to photograph the match for game coverage, I saw these kids playing in the auxiliary gym running in and out of this shaft of light coming down from the setting sun. I started to make photographs and I took several that I thought looked good, but this one seemed like the essence of play captured. I also liked the yellow, even though it'll be in the paper in Black and White, which I also like. I'm sure I would've seen this, but I do know seeing Harmony's pictures made me really see this and work to find the right frame. Today is Harmony's birthday, so I thought I would post this picture to thank her for her inspiration. Meadville Tribune photograph by Richard Sayer
