I've posted outtakes from team sports shoots before. I always like to get the teams to stick out tongues or jump up in the air and stuff to just see if we get something fun that we all can just share on facebook or where ever. I haven't had the time to post a lot of these, but today I wanted to make up a little 4x6 of the team to give to everyone and figured I'd use one of these arms up outtakes. One player couldn't be there for picture day but I wanted to include her so I figured I'd photo shop her in and as I getting ready to spend quite a bit of time to try to make it look like I didn't photoshop her in I got this idea of having her 'photo bomb' the photo. For those of you much like myself not so long ago that don't know what photo bombing is---its when someone sticks themselves somehow in the picture---usually it is someone not even connected to the people being photographed---careful if you google photo bombing you get some pretty nasty examples. So I made this up today and thought I'd share it--hopefully give folks a little smile today! SayerMotter goofy photo by Richard Sayer.

The world is digital right? Well it is--mostly. I teach a photo 1 class at Allegheny and we still teach in the darkroom. I am conflicted a little being a digital convert and knowing that most of my work is dependent upon the benefits of the digital world, I stay later on assignments and can find potentially more meaningful storytelling moments, I can easily check my take and see if there are holes to be filled with more photos etc..... But there is something that will never happen in the digital world and that is the serendipitous 'stuff' that can happen in the chemical process. I remember discovering years ago after making an obviously poor exposure in the enlargement stage of the process and deciding to try to solarizes and play around a little with moving chemicals around and contaminating them to see what I could get. I discovered I could get reds, oranges and yellows to appear in the black and white prints. I never learned how to control it--perhaps if I stuck with experimenting. I expected these to fade away over the years and some have changed a little, but some remain. I took this picture tonight of one of the prints I made of the guitarist for Seven Nations. Now the original isn't this red, but it is red and grey and orange-ish in color and tones. The Lucifer lens with Blanko film made it a heightened red for sure. I might try to preserve some of these old experimental images with either digital scans or just making digital photos with my slr and iphones and just let them be what they are in the next generation. I had an art teacher one time who started out his class syllabus with a lesson on health and well-being. This is a painting class where we mix solvents and other mind altering fumes together to get what we want to get done. But he was insistent that keeping yourself healthy was the key to getting work done. So, even though I try to practice the art of enjoying my life, I do look into healthier foods overall(Yes beer is healthy---somewhat!) So getting to work with a local nutritionist and author is a pleasure. Rosanne needed some shots recently for a blog she is working on. And she had some ideas and we got together sorta at the spur of the moment and tried to make her ideas come to life in pictures she could use. We also got a few outtakes...this being one of those. Once Rosanne launches her blog I'll post some of the work we did for that with a link. Below is a link to her website. Now there are countless theories to good health out there and we need to find our own, but keeping in mind that the healthier we are, the better chance we have of accomplishing what is in our mind and spirit! Its all connected. Visit Rosanne Rust's website by clicking the link below.http://www.rustnutrition.com/About_Rosanne.php And yes we did talk about beer during our shoot. Here is Rosanne's new blog Chewthefacts.com One of the things I used to talk about alot with painters is how we were always looking for the form! What form will this particular piece take. Especially in undergraduate school when we really didn't have our own style yet--we were trying everything. What form will it take??? I feel that way with memory mates---what form will they take? I am really still in my infancy really with photoshop--so when I think of doing something---usually that means learning how to do it first. I really like trying different things--some work---some don't. I admit that I have a pile of things that I really don't think work. I think most artists and dedicated workers will admit that more failures occur than successes, but the failures we learn more from!!!!! I feel like this attempt is close--but not quite there yet---minor adjustments are needed, but I wanted to throw it out there tonight to see if the good people in Saegertown had any thoughts. i like alot of it, but am thinking about changing the 'softball' and the '2012' and depending on whose memory mate it is---changing the placement of the name. I do want to know though....if you think it..... well....sucks....let me know this too!!! But be gentle!!!! SayerMotter Photograph and design by Richard Sayer. By the way---I thought Ashlyn was outta town!!! And I wish I thought to tell everyone that I needed a cell phone picture---even if they didn't want a photo....live and learn!!!!!
OK--I admit, i feel a little goofy attaching these little magnetic lenses onto an iphone in order to take pictures with it---still haven't really used it much as a phone. A macro lens and a fisheye lens arrived today and though I haven't really had a decent chance to try them out, but I did make a re-make of a picture I made the other night of this flower using a flash light from behind the flower to light it. The macro lens did make a difference in closeness and clarity.(I admit I did crop these in as well to improve the compositions a little and to show just how clear these are with this silly little phone camera. I feel the fisheye will make for some great wedding shots this summer--can't wait to try it out, perhaps at my niece's wedding in May. I took a picture of my dog with it below today. I'm not really much of tech photographer, but I do think I need to do some serious testing of the different things I have so I'll better know how to use them in business. Photographs by Richard Sayer
I guess the fascination with retro photography lately with all these cell phone camera apps is something to think about. The old becoming the new again. We look back on some styles and realize they weren't so bad and then try to put our more modern twist to it. I think thats what I was thinking about recently when I wanted to try photography the Meadville baseball team and Saegertown softball team with the hipstamatic app. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with them, but I knew I at least wanted to have them to perhaps do something! Combining the cell phone picture with what I'm referring to these days as 'my real camera' can perhaps give these teams a unique look for this seasons pictures. So when I began to design the MASH baseball sports mate I had this retro idea in mind and it even led me toward the muted color palate of a retro looking photo with the individual and team photos. This isn't something I've tried before and I'm going to sleep on it to see if it seems like a good idea. SayerMotter Photograp
Well--today I got a chance to witness the beginning of a life in this world. Nerissa and Lee allowed me to be a part of their very great moment of bringing their daughter Brynn into the world. It was great, Brynn arrived at 3:50 p.m. this afternoon. I took many photos but I want to make sure mom and dad see them and for the most part they are private photos for them, but they saw this image from my iphone and we posted it together on facebook from the hospital today. These foot prints remind me of the history of this world somehow.... evidence .... great stuff! I feel very lucky to be included in their day as a documenter and I can't wait to give them some pictures from this experience. Truly a great life experience! Congrats to Lee and Nerissa and especially little Brynn Sophia... welcome to the world! SayerMotter Photograph by Richa
I posted a few photos of Nerissa's pregnancy over the last couple months, well it really is just a matter of moments now. Nerissa has shared her story with me and allowed me to share some of it in previous posts. As we get near the moment I know their excitement is at an incredible high and I have to admit I'm pretty excited for them, and for me as well since, if all goes well with timing and schedules, Nerissa and Lee have agreed to allow me to photograph the birth. Pretty exciting stuff. SayerMotter Photograph by Richard Sayer. Good luck Nerissa and Lee and baby Brynn!!!
I photographed Chaykala Lindsey's senior portraits this afternoon. Chaykala is a senior at Meadville High School and will be graduating in a couple of months. She is already on her way to a college education and a bright future, not to mention an expert javelin thrower.
SayerMotter Photograph By: Harmony Motter When we decided it was time for us to get iphones at SayerMotter Photography it wasn't to be trendy(people that know me just snickered a little bit trying to think of me as trendy--or trying to be). We see it as a tool to make pictures in a different way and have them easily at the ready to share---to offer our clients something perhaps a little bit fun to go with their photos that they order. The apps you can get to make your pictures look a certain way adds yet another little twist to it. Earlier today I was thinking about old school vintage photos and thought it might be good to try that out and I had just recently bought the Helga Viking lens and Float film and thought that combination might be a 'look' to try. Now I don't have the guts to try a shoot using nothing but the cell phone apps(and the quality isn't quite there yet for bigger pictures) but I might try to design this memory mate in a style that I can use these somehow--even if only in the background.
